Vodio je Everton u Premier ligi, bio pomoćnik Sir Alexa Fergusona, a koliko je bio velik vidi se i po tome što je bio iznimno cijenjen u redovima najvećih rivala.
Najveća legenda u povijesti Rangersa, Walter Smith, preminuo je danas u 74. godini života. Smith je tri i pol godine bio škotski izbornik, jedan period radio je kao pomoćnik Sir Alexa Fergusona, a u Premier ligi je vodio Everton skoro četiri godine.
Smith je jedan od najvećih škotskih trenera svih vremena i najveća legenda u povijesti Rangersa. Škotskog velikana vodio je do 10 titula prvaka Škotske, a osvojio je još pet Škotskih kupova i šest Škotskih liga kupova.
Posljednju utakmicu na klupi Rangersa odradio je 2011. godine. Njegov oproštaj dogodio se protiv Kilmanrocka kad je njegov Rangers slavio rezultatom 1:5, a u toj utakmici je pogodak i asistenciju upisao Nikica Jelavić. Hrvatski centarfor je pod trenerskom palicom Waltera Smitha skupio 19 pogodaka i osam asistencija u 28 nastupa, a vodio je i Dadu Pršu i Slavena Bilića.
